Designed to reduce automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperatures, this universal aluminium tube-and-fin cooler protects against excessive heat, helping to extend transmission life and improve reliability under demanding driving conditions.

The Ultra-Cool^® Part No. 404 is recommended for V8 and 4WD vehicles manufactured prior to 1990 and is ideally suited to heavy towing, off-road driving, touring and commercial applications. It is also suitable for use as a super heavy-duty power steering oil cooler, making it an excellent choice for vehicles with oversized tyres and high steering loads. Every cooler is 100% pressure tested to ensure maximum durability and reliability.

Why Install a Transmission Oil Cooler?

Heat is the leading cause of automatic transmission wear and premature failure. Towing, off-road driving, steep climbs, heavy loads and prolonged highway driving all increase transmission fluid temperatures, causing fluid breakdown and excessive wear on internal components.

The Davies Craig Ultra-Cool® Transmission Oil Cooler removes excess heat before the fluid returns to the transmission, helping maintain optimum operating temperatures, improve shift quality and significantly extend transmission service life. For vehicles with high steering loads, the #404 also provides outstanding cooling performance as a super heavy-duty power steering oil cooler.

How to Select the Correct Transmission Oil Cooler

All Davies Craig transmission oil coolers are universal fit, making it easy to choose the right cooler based on the available mounting space rather than your vehicle's make or model.

Step 1 – Determine the Correct Cooler for Your Application

Use the Transmission & Engine Oil Cooler Product Selection Guide (below) to identify the recommended transmission oil cooler for your application. The guide considers factors such as:

• Vehicle type
• Transmission type
• Intended use and operating conditions

This will recommend the appropriate transmission oil cooler size for your application.

Step 2 – Is a Thermatic^® Fan Beneficial?

Some applications benefit from the addition of a Thermatic^® Electric Fan to provide consistent airflow through the oil cooler when natural airflow is limited.

A fan is recommended for applications including:

• Towing
• Motorsport or performance driving
• Off-road vehicles
• Remote-mounted oil coolers
• Low-speed or stop-start operation

Step 3 – Measure the Available Space

Most transmission oil coolers are mounted in front of the radiator or air conditioning condenser to maximise airflow.

Measure the available installation area and record the following dimensions:

• Width
• Height
• Available Clearance (Depth)

Step 4 – Choose the Largest Cooler That Fits

As a general rule, the largest transmission oil cooler that comfortably fits within the available space will provide the best cooling performance. A larger cooler offers greater heat dissipation, helping to maintain lower automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperatures, particularly when towing, carrying heavy loads, driving off-road, or operating in hot conditions.
